ADULT EDUCATIONThe Adult Education program remains vital to the ongoing spiritual growth and nurture of the Nutana Park church community. In this program we try and include topics that are current, in some cases controversial, but all meaningful to those who faithfully participate in this aspect of being church at Nutana Park. Attendance generally ranges from 25 to 40 persons. Some examples of previous areas of study and discussion are described below: MENTAL ILLNESS - viewed from the position of our church existing as a healing and caring community. Professional and lay persons involved in the work of Mental Health Services in Saskatoon presented and helped us gain a greater appreciation for and understanding of issues in the area of Mental Illness. HOMOSEXUALITY: Understanding Others and Ourselves was the focus of these 9 very well attended sessions. What should our faithful and spiritual response to persons who are homosexual be? Intense and personal discussion of this topic was new for many, and definitive answers to searching questions difficult. Interpretations were many. This adult study group was courageous in working through issues evident in this area, and acknowledged a much better understanding of the real-life impact of homosexuality on individuals, families and communities after the series was complete. CHILD POVERTY IN SASKATOON captured the attention of this study group during these 3 sessions. It became clear that child poverty is growing in Saskatoon, and we dare not close our eyes. A local project that people from Nutana Park can support received close attention. SHARING THE MISSION OF MENNONITE CONGREGATIONS allowed this group to hear first hand what many of our sister churches in Saskatoon shared as their mission. This series certainly provided a better understanding of what the presenting churches understood their primary mission to be. This series ended with the Adult Education group spending one session articulating what Nutana Park’s main mission was understood to be. Good things came out of this series for us, and we trust for the churches who visited us. GOD AMONG US: A wonderful story. This series was a four session short study of the lectionary gospel of Luke presented by Vern and Anita. As always, these two provided excellent insights into what the scriptures tell about the history of God coming to us as a person in Jesus. Again, very well attended.
